Saturday came around; time for breakfast came around….since Gerlinde Naegle insisted we found ourselves cycling to the Bio-Farm, Demeter certified, http://www.hof-klostersee.de/. Every Saturday they open the neighboring rooms to the store for a genuine farmer’s breakfast. Not the British or American way but the German way. Check out the photos.
Gerlinde made oven-fresh Broetchen’s (rolls) from their own flour ground by a real stone mill. Their cheeses, organic products from their 40 or so milk cows and a few goats grazing happily and contently around the meadows, are delicious, especially their red-peppercorn butter cheeses on top of the Broetchen. Jams of all kinds, white cheese and milk are all produced on their organic farm. How fun… not to forget the wonderful soft-boiled eggs from the chickens that are running around. A fabulous breakfast indeed! I guess I could have asked where the coffee was produced.
So Gerlinde came and joined us at our table and started to tell us all about the Kostersee – Hof Bio-dynamic farm. Mind you, she has a very good friend living in England so has a high command of the English language.
Bob and I enjoyed stories about merchants of Hamburg that bought the farm back in 1850 or so; about a very savage storm flood 1872 that flooded all the houses; farms and a little village at the beach. Many people died in the floods in the area, so did their livestock. On the Klostersee-Hof 300 animals perished except for a bull that made his way up every ladder he found and thus survived.
Also stories of the time she arrived as a young woman to live there with her first husband, the wonderful goals they set for themselves, their hard labors and the constant work-work-work that is involved in living a bio-dynamic life. Exhausting, she says, but very rewarding.
We sure learned a lot – Bob and I! What fun an adventure becomes when you have not asked for it. I loved “the consequences” – they were full of stories, good food & good company, all coming from our neighbors across the field. What more could you want in life?
